  4. A beautiful, fun diversion, Puzzler brings all the power of your GS into play!  Following in the footsteps of our original Pixel Puzzler, Puzzler is a computerized jigsaw puzzle, but this new program uses wonderful super hi-res graphics and pleasant GS sounds.

  6. HOW TO PLAY PUZZLER

  8. When you run Puzzler, you will be greeted with a title screen.  Pull down the File menu and choose ╥Open.╙  Select any of the pictures.  For instance, choose ╥Canyon.Vista.╙  This picture will load in.  Now you are ready to try your first puzzle.

  10. Pull down the Game Menu and choose ╥New Puzzle.╙  Select the number of pieces you wish.

  12. You automatically start in ╥Block Mode.╙  In its simplest form, Block Mode allows you to click on a piece, then click on the place you want to put it.  You can also select a block by clicking and dragging, and then you click on where you╒d like to place the block.

  14. Once you get a piece in a correct position, you╒ll hear a chime sound telling you you have improved the puzzle.  When you get all the pieces in the right place, a dialog box will appear congratulating you, and telling you how many moves you made to solve the puzzle.

  16. MORE FEATURES

  18. Now that you have the simple game under your belt, let╒s look at all the menus and see  what other options are available.

  20. The Apple menu, which also lists desk accessories you can use, holds two Puzzler items: ╥About Puzzler╙ and ╥Help.╙  About Puzzler provides the copyright information.  Help tells you how to play Puzzler.

In the File menu, we find: ╥Open . . . ,╙ ╥Restore . . . ,╙ ╥Close,╙ ╥Save as . . . ,╙ and ╥Quit.╙  Open will load in a puzzle picture.  Puzzler will load in ANY super hi-res picture saved as Apple Preferred or Screen Image (uncompressed) format.  Restore will load in a saved puzzle in progress.  Close will put away the current puzzle.  Save As will save a puzzle in progress.  Quit quits Puzzler.

  24. The Edit menu is here so desk accessories that need it will work with Puzzler.

  26. The Game menu contains two options: ╥New Puzzle╙ and ╥Peek at Picture.╙  New Puzzle is explained above.  Peek at Picture lets you see the original picture again.

  28. The Options menu has quite a few choices: three relating to the picture╒s color (╥Normal Color,╙ ╥Gray Scale,╙ and ╥Standard Colors╙), three relating to the way pieces are moved (╥Swap Mode,╙ ╥Slide Mode,╙ and ╥Block Mode╙), and one relating to sound (╥Sound On/Off╙).

  30. Normal Color uses the colors the picture came with.  Gray Scale will change the colors the picture has in it to a scale of grays from white to black.  Standard Colors changes the screen colors to the default Apple colors.

There are three ways to move pieces.  Swap mode will swap the highlighted piece for the one you click on. Slide mode is extremely difficult: one piece is taken out, and you can only move a piece by sliding it into the empty space.  Block mode is the easiest to work with╤╤click on a piece or select a block, then click where you want it.

  34. Sound On and Off can stop the computer from dinging at every correct piece and ringing upon a solved puzzle.

  38. HOW TO COPY PUZZLER TO YOUR OWN DISK

  40. Select ╥File Copier╙ from the File menu (or press Open╨apple F) to copy the Puzzler files to another disk.
